Djokovic's Fitness in Question as He Practices with Heavily-Wrapped Left Leg Ahead of Australian Open
- World Soccer Today -
Concerns have risen that Djokovic may not participate in the Australian Open as he was spotted training with a heavily-wrapped left leg and cancelling a session.
The injury in question is a hamstring injury.
Djokovic, who is 35 years old, managed to compete and win the Adelaide International on January 8th despite having a hamstring injury.
He then traveled to Melbourne for the Australian Open, where he cancelled one practice session on Sunday and another session was removed from the schedule, raising concerns that he may not participate in the tournament.
Despite this, he was seen practicing on the court with heavy strapping on his left leg, indicating that the injury may still be an issue.
Djokovic's coach, Goran Ivanisevic, was seen in images from the practice session with a grin on his face, suggesting that the atmosphere within the team is positive.
Djokovic is set to begin his campaign in the tournament with a first round match against Roberto Carballes Baena from Spain.
Djokovic's first round match in the Australian Open is scheduled to take place on the Rod Laver Arena tomorrow, following the match between Ons Jabeur and Tamara Zidansek in the evening session.
Several players who were considered top contenders for the tournament have already withdrawn due to injuries.
World number one, Carlos Alcaraz, had to pull out before the tournament due to a leg injury, while Australian player Nick Kyrgios withdrew today due to a knee injury that requires surgery.
In contrast, the reigning champion Rafael Nadal successfully advanced to the second round by defeating British player Jack Draper 7-5, 6-2, 6-4, 6-1.
