The newspaper 'El Periodico de Catalunya' published leaked conversations from a WhatsApp group involving several members of the team that worked with Josep Maria Bartomeu at Barcelona Football Club.
One member, Roman Gomez Ponti, who was responsible for the club's legal services, expressed negative comments about Lionel Messi on the day that his large contract was made public.
On January 31st, 2021, the newspaper 'El Mundo' published details of Lionel Messi's large contract with Barcelona Football Club. The revelation was not well received by the club, particularly by then-president Josep Maria Bartomeu. However, recently leaked WhatsApp conversations reveal that the discontent towards Messi went beyond just Bartomeu.
Roman Gomez Ponti, who was in charge of the club's legal services, insulted and criticized Messi on the day that his contract was made public. In the message, Ponti accuses Messi of having too much influence on the club's decisions, including signings, sales, and renewals, and accuses him of having a dictatorial attitude. He also accuses Messi of taking advantage of the club, especially during the pandemic, and expresses his hope that Messi will leave the club without any support from the fans.
Oscar Grau, the former CEO of Barcelona Football Club, responded affirmatively to the message criticizing Lionel Messi, before then-president Josep Maria Bartomeu also expressed his agreement with the message. However, Bartomeu added that while he agreed with much of the message, the club's image should come first, and that these types of messages can harm the club.
