The Kansas City Chiefs opened their 2022 season with eight successive games against brigades that had winning records in 2021. They've also faced the defending NFC and AFC titleholders and an AFC West that went out of its way to load up with largely- priced free agents in trouble to stop Kansas City’s string of six division crowns.
But with four games remaining in the season, Kansas City is on the road with its 10- 3 record, taking just one palm to decide its eighth straight playoff situation and seventh successive division crown. Standing in its way are the Houston Texans. Under new head trainer Lovie Smith, the ballot has collected just one palm( and a tie) in 2022 — but a week ago, Houston nearly knocked off the 9- 3 Dallas cowhands.
The Chiefs won the opening coin toss, taking to postpone their decision to the alternate half. As a result, Houston began with the ball — starting from the 25- yard line after a touchback.
Houston got rolling with a quick screen to wide receiver Amari Rodgers that broke through into the third position for a first down. Following that, tackles in the run game by linebacker Nick Bolton and protective end Frank Clark forced a third down, where tight content forced a gamble down. The Chiefs ’ defense forced a quick punt to start the game.
A slant to wide receiver Juju Smith- Schuster started the Chiefs ’ opening drive, gaining seven yards and setting up third and short; tight end Travis Kelce moved the sticks on a quick megahit — also moved them again on the following play. Wide receiver Kadarius Toney’s first touch of his return was a spurt reach that gained five yards. On the preceding third down, wide receiver Marquez Valdes- Scantling broke down from Houston’s secondary — but he and Mahomes were n’t on the same runner, and the pass was thrown short. The missed occasion was followed up by a punt.
Chiefs ’ novitiate cornerback Joshua Williams started the alternate drive by breaking up a slant. Safety Justin Reid and protective end Carlos Dunlap helped stuff a run on the following snap. On third and 10, a quick screen was corralled by Clark and protective end Mike Danna — allowing no yards on any of the three snaps. Kansas City forced a alternate-straight punt. The opening play of Kansas City’s alternate drive ended with a plethora of Texans on top of Mahomes for a sack. That backed them up, and they could n’t recover pressure on third down forced an incompletion, and a alternate-straight punt.
Texans ’ quarterback Jeff Driskell produced a nine- yard rush on the first play, setting up a chains- moving run on the coming play. Linebacker Nick Bolton and protective end George Karlaftis stuffed an outside run on the coming snap, but Houston made up for it with a big pass play over the head of cornerback Trent McDuffie, gaining 34 yards. The Texans continued moving the ball down the field, taking advantage of bloated man content by linebacker Nick Bolton to get into the red zone.
Kansas City forced a third down, where linebacker Darius Harris was called for pass hindrance to reset the campo for Houston. One play after a sack by Clark, quarterback Davis Mills set up novitiate tight end Teagan Quitoriano, who beat cornerback L’Jarius Sneed on an in- breaking route. Houston had the early 7- 0 lead.
After only one carry through the first two drives, novitiate running back Isiah Pacheco broke out for 29 yards between two rushes — circumscribing the first quarter with instigation near midfield.
Punter Tommy Townsend boggled his first punt 40 yards, landing inside the 20- yard line. His alternate punt traveled 57 yards, but was returned 13 yards.
